Adobe XD was Adobe's proprietary UI/UX design and prototyping tool, launched to compete with Sketch and Figma; Adobe has wound down active development and steered customers toward other tools. Full details →

With Adobe having wound down active development on XD and stopped offering it to new subscribers, teams still on it need to migrate somewhere actively maintained rather than choosing between two live products. Penpot is a natural landing point: a free, open source design and prototyping tool with a similar artboard-and-component workflow, storing files in open SVG/CSS/HTML rather than a proprietary format, and self-hostable for teams that want their design data on their own infrastructure. It won’t import XD files directly, so migrating existing projects means rebuilding or exporting assets rather than a one-click transfer, but it gives teams a tool that will keep receiving updates going forward.
