Open Source Alternatives to Sketch

Switching from Sketch to Penpot means leaving behind a Mac-exclusive native app and its annual subscription for a browser-based tool that runs on any operating system, self-hostable on your own infrastructure if needed. Penpot stores files in open SVG, CSS, and HTML rather than Sketch’s proprietary format, and covers the same core symbol/component and prototyping workflow. The trade-off is Sketch’s large, mature plugin ecosystem and years of Mac-specific performance tuning, which Penpot’s browser-based approach doesn’t fully replicate yet, but for teams not tied to macOS, it removes both the platform lock-in and the subscription cost.
