Overview

Blender was originally developed in the Netherlands by Ton Roosendaal at the animation studio NeoGeo, and was first released publicly in 1994. After the company behind it, Not a Number Technologies, went bankrupt in 2002, Roosendaal founded the non-profit Blender Foundation and ran a “Free Blender” crowdfunding campaign that raised enough money to buy the rights to the source code and release it under the GNU General Public License in October 2002.

Since then, Blender has grown from a niche modeling tool into a full production suite used across the film, game, and visualization industries, with major version 2.8 in 2019 introducing a redesigned interface (Eevee real-time renderer, workspace-based UI) that significantly broadened its adoption. Development is coordinated by the Blender Foundation and its associated Blender Institute, funded through the Blender Development Fund, Blender Studio subscriptions, and corporate members of the Blender Foundation’s development fund.
