Overview
Adobe Premiere originated as “Reel Time,” a QuickTime-based video editor developed by SuperMac Technology, which Adobe acquired in August 1991. Adobe released it as Premiere for the Apple Macintosh later that year, with a Microsoft Windows version following in September 1993. In August 2003, Adobe shipped a substantially rewritten version under the name Adobe Premiere Pro, which became the company’s flagship non-linear video editing application and has remained under continuous development since.
Today, Adobe Premiere Pro is distributed exclusively through Adobe Creative Cloud, available as a standalone single-app subscription or bundled with other Adobe applications in the Creative Cloud All Apps plan. It runs on Windows and macOS; there is no native Linux version. The application is widely used for editing film, television, and web video, and integrates closely with other Adobe tools such as After Effects for motion graphics and visual effects, and Adobe Audition for audio post-production. Recent releases have added AI-assisted features, including Generative Extend, which uses Adobe’s Firefly video model to lengthen clips beyond their original recorded footage.
