Open Source Alternatives to Fusion 360

Switching from Fusion 360 to FreeCAD removes the dependency on an Autodesk account and cloud connectivity, along with the risk of previously free usage tiers changing terms again. FreeCAD covers the same core parametric, feature-based modeling workflow, with its workbench system extending into assembly design, FEM simulation, and CAM toolpath generation through community-maintained workbenches — the closest open source match to Fusion 360’s combined CAD/CAM/simulation scope. It runs and saves projects fully offline and locally by default, though Fusion 360’s generative design tools and more mature CAM toolpath library remain ahead of FreeCAD’s equivalents for now.
