Overview

QuickTime Player is the default multimedia player included with macOS. Originally released in 1991 as part of the QuickTime media framework, the standalone player continues to ship with every Mac. Apple ended support for QuickTime on Windows in early 2016; shortly after, newly discovered unpatched vulnerabilities led the U.S. government’s US-CERT to advise Windows users to uninstall it entirely, leaving the player exclusively on macOS since. Its format support is limited compared to cross-platform alternatives — it handles MOV, MP4, M4V, and a handful of audio formats but lacks codec support for MKV, FLAC, and many other common container and codec combinations.
