Ardour

Overview

Ardour was started in 1999 by Paul Davis, who also created the JACK Audio Connection Kit, with the goal of building a professional-grade, Linux-native digital audio workstation comparable to Pro Tools. It reached a stable 1.0 release in 2005 and has been developed continuously since, with support for Windows and macOS added in later versions alongside its original Linux focus.

The project is funded through a mix of paid builds and voluntary subscriptions — official pre-built binaries require payment or a subscription, though the source code is fully GPL-licensed and can be compiled for free by anyone willing to build it themselves. Ardour is built around JACK and ALSA on Linux, and supports LV2, VST, and Audio Unit plugins across platforms.
