Overview

darktable was started in 2009 by Johannes Hanika, a graphics researcher, as a personal project for managing and processing his own RAW photo library, deliberately modeled on Lightroom’s non-destructive workflow at a time when few open source alternatives existed. The project was released under the GPL-3.0-or-later license and has since grown into a community-maintained application with regular releases, wide camera RAW format support via its own processing pipeline, and packaging across Linux distributions, Windows, and macOS.

Like Lightroom, darktable never modifies the original RAW file; every adjustment is stored as a non-destructive “history stack” that can be edited, reordered, or reset at any time, and multiple processing modules (exposure, tone curve, denoising, lens correction, and dozens more) can be combined and blended per image.
