AerynOS (formerly Serpent OS)
AerynOS, previously known as Serpent OS, is an independent Linux distribution built from the ground up to deliver a modern, efficient, and developer-focused operating system. The project emphasizes performance, reliability, and clean system design while embracing contemporary Linux technologies.
Modern Architecture and Atomic Updates
AerynOS adopts an atomic update model where system changes are applied fully or safely rolled back. This approach improves stability, reduces system breakage risk, and makes updates more predictable. Combined with its rolling-release philosophy, users benefit from up-to-date software while maintaining system integrity.
Developer-Centric Tooling
The distribution integrates modern toolchains such as LLVM/Clang and increasingly Rust-based utilities. It also features the moss package manager, designed to support atomic transactions, reliable upgrades, and simplified rollback capabilities — all aligned with the project’s reliability goals.
Desktop Experience and Hardware Support
AerynOS is designed primarily for UEFI-based systems and currently supports:
- GNOME desktop environment
- COSMIC desktop environment (modern Rust-driven desktop initiative)
The system also supports modern GPUs from NVIDIA and works well with gaming platforms such as Steam, making it suitable for developers, power users, and Linux gaming enthusiasts.
Minimalism, Security, and Performance Focus
The distribution aims to stay lightweight and uncluttered while prioritizing:
- Security-focused system components
- Developer productivity tools
- Modern packaging and update workflows
- High performance with minimal overhead
This makes AerynOS particularly attractive for advanced Linux users, developers, and enthusiasts seeking a forward-looking distribution.
Rebranding From Serpent OS
On 14 February 2025, the project officially announced its rebranding from Serpent OS to AerynOS to establish a clearer identity and future direction. Despite the name change, the core goals, development team, and technical vision remain consistent.
