Kali Linux 2026.2 is now available as the latest update to the rolling-release penetration testing and digital forensics distribution. The release brings updated desktop environments, infrastructure improvements, faster virtual machine startup, several new security tools, and and updates across several supported platforms, including Kali NetHunter.

GNOME 50 and KDE Plasma 6.6

This release updates Kali’s two primary desktop environments.

The GNOME edition now ships with GNOME 50, while the KDE edition includes KDE Plasma 6.6. Alongside these updates, both desktop environments receive their latest applications and performance improvements.

Modernized APT Configuration

New Kali installations now use the modern Debian repository configuration format located at:

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/kali.sources

This replaces the traditional /etc/apt/sources.list file. Existing installations will automatically migrate to the new format during the upgrade process.

Faster Virtual Machine Startup

Kali Linux 2026.2 reduces the size of its initial RAM disk (initrd), resulting in faster boot times for virtual machine images. This improvement benefits users who frequently run Kali in virtualization platforms for testing or lab environments.

Helper Script Improvements

The release also improves consistency across Kali’s helper scripts when managing system services. In addition, users upgrading packages such as polkit or xrdp should reboot their systems after the upgrade so the changes are fully applied.

Nine New Security Tools

Kali Linux 2026.2 adds the following tools to its repositories:

  • binwalk3 – Firmware analysis and extraction utility.
  • bloodhound-ce-python – Python collector for BloodHound Community Edition.
  • bluetuxedo – Bluetooth security assessment tool.
  • crlfuzz – Scanner for CRLF injection vulnerabilities.
  • donut-shellcode – Generates position-independent shellcode from executables.
  • gitxray – Security-focused analysis tool for GitHub users and repositories.
  • ligolo-ng-common – Shared components for the Ligolo-ng tunneling framework.
  • rubeus – Tool for interacting with and testing Kerberos environments.
  • tinja – Utility for detecting server-side template injection (SSTI) vulnerabilities.

Kali NetHunter

Kali NetHunter also receives updates in this release, including support for additional Android devices and refreshed kernels for selected hardware. The project continues to expand compatibility across supported devices.

Upgrading to Kali Linux 2026.2

Existing Kali Linux users can upgrade using the standard rolling-release commands:

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
grep VERSION /etc/os-release

Users upgrading polkit or xrdp are advised to reboot after the upgrade.

New installation images are available for desktop systems, virtual machines, cloud platforms, ARM devices, Raspberry Pi, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and other supported platforms from the official Kali Linux downloads page.
