Mr. Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 22.10 with the code name Kinetic Kudu. In addition to the core improvements from the Ubuntu foundation, the Ubuntu MATE 22.10 introduces center alignment of panel applets, revamped HUD, and a new user manager.

As a regular release, Ubuntu MATE 22.10 Kinetic Kudu will get updates and support for the next nine months. Users who prefer a longer support period, should stick with the LTS release or upgrade their system to the next regular release after nine months.

What is new in Ubuntu MATE 22.10?

Ubuntu MATE 22.10 has fewer changes compared to the previous releases. This is because the key contributor Martin Wimpress was working on Debian MATE to provide a consistent user experience in Debian MATE and Ubuntu MATE. It will help to reduce the integration effort required in the future. The following section briefly explains the key highlights of Ubuntu MATE 22.10 Kinetic Kudu.

  • The MATE Panel included an early snapshot release of mate-panel 1.27.0 along with a patch set that adds center alignment of panel applets. MATE Desktop will ship this feature in 1.28.0 only, however, Ubuntu MATE users can use it earlier. The Tweaks application is updated to accommodate the same while switching the layouts.
  • Ships beautiful AI-generated Kinetic Kudu wallpapers. According to the author, it was very challenging to generate natural-looking Kinetic Kudu wallpaper.
  • Pipewire replaces Pulseaudio and Bluetooth audio codec support has been expanded with the addition of AAC, LDAC, aptX, and aptX HD.
  • MATE HUD now supports MATE, XFCE, and Budgie, and has improved accuracy for HUD placement.
  • Introduces MATE user manager for managing users.
  • Ubuntu MATE Artwork package has been updated to include all the refinements and improvements in the suite of Yaru themes
